There are greenish and yellow spots and vertical bands on the head, back and sides, which are visible when alive and disappear when dead. The underside is lighter colored. Gill covers are open and spiny. The caudal fin is round.
The grouper is hermaphrodite and has female sex organs when it reaches sexual maturity. After spending a certain period of his life as a female, when he reaches the age of 18, his female sex organs disappear and male sex organs develop instead, and he lives the rest of his life as a man.
Following the rapid decrease in the number of individuals and the species becoming under threat, according to the communiqué published by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, all hunting and gathering was prohibited from September 1, 2016 to August 31, 2020, and the species was taken under protection.
