The name jaguar is derived from the Native American word 'yaguar', meaning 'one who kills with one leap'. It is the third largest cat in the world and the largest cat in America, after the Lion and the Tiger.
Jaguars are superior hunters. They have no natural predators except humans who hunt them for their fur or for fun. Their fur is normally yellow and tan, but can range from reddish brown to black. Black Jaguars, also known as 'Black Panthers', emerge due to a genetic change. Only 6% of jaguars are black.
